Chapter 138: It Really Wasn’t Me

Chapter 138: It Really Wasn’t Me

Qin Youxuan furrowed her brows, wanting to turn over despite the discomfort, but the intense pain throughout her body caused her to gasp for air. She opened her eyes with some difficulty.

The environment she saw was unfamiliar, leaving her startled.

It took Qin Youxuan several moments to gather herself.

“Are you awake?”

From the floor-to-ceiling window, Dan Hanjie’s tall figure turned slightly and he walked toward her.

He gently touched her forehead with his large hand, his provocative eyes narrowing slightly, “The fever has finally subsided.”

Qin Youxuan’s gaze met his, her bewildered eyes fixated on him for a long time with no reaction.

It was as if she couldn’t confirm if he was real or an illusion her mind was conjuring.

“Am I dead?”

Qin Youxuan asked hesitantly. Her voice was as coarse as if it had been scratched over rough stones, creating a fearful, dull sound.

Speaking caused her throat to burn with pain.

“Considering your state, you might as well be,” Dan Hanjie answered, his provocative look softening into a slow smile.

Seeing her dazed state, his irritated mood inexplicably calmed down.

His long fingers grazed the singed ends of Qin Youxuan’s hair. He frowned, “Can you remember what happened before you fainted?”

Qin Youxuan’s eyes flickered, her pupils suddenly tightening.

“I assume you remember then?” Dan Hanjie asked, fingering his pinky ring. He sat down on the bed, causing it to sag noticeably under his weight.

“I can’t believe I’m not dead…” Qin Youxuan finally came out of her shock, raising her hand to pinch her face, but the contact caused her to grimace in pain.

“Hiss…”

“It hurts so much!”

Not just her face, her entire body hurt when she moved.

Her vacant eyes began to regain clarity as her memories slowly returned.

She abruptly lifted her head, “Did you save me?”

She vaguely remembered seeing Dan Hanjie’s figure when she was drifting in and out of consciousness. She initially thought she was dreaming, but it seemed he really was…

He truly saved her…

Qin Youxuan’s heart tightened, a complex feeling arose within her.

Even though she had reminded herself to stay away from this dangerous man, it was him who saved her time and time again.

It was beginning to feel like she owed him more and more…

“I didn’t kill that man!” Qin Youxuan’s face suddenly paled, she grabbed onto Dan Hanjie’s hand in panic after a moment’s hesitation.

“I just wanted to escape, but he wouldn’t let me. I pushed him in haste… but he wasn’t dead then! It was… it was only later, he accidentally fell and then…”

Qin Youxuan’s eyes reddened, “Please believe me, it really wasn’t me…”

For some reason, her intuition told her that if even Dan Hanjie didn’t believe her, nobody else would.

There were only two people in the room at the time, her and the tall kidnapper. Even though she was a victim, there was a man dead. Even if it was self-defense, she may have overdone it.

“I’ll handle this matter. You’ve been unconscious for a long time, you should be looking out for your own life now,” Dan Hanjie said, looking at the hand she had placed over his, raising an eyebrow.

Only then did Qin Youxuan notice that she was holding on to his arm. Her hand slowly let go but before she could fully pull away, he grabbed her hand.

She looked up at him, taken aback.

“Are you scared?” Dan Hanjie noticed the sweat on the palm of her hand and his lips curled up into a smile.

Qin Youxuan couldn’t find the words to reply, but she didn’t try to put on a brave face either. After a second’s hesitation, she nodded heavily.

She was really scared.

Even if she was bold, watching someone die before her eyes would shake anyone.
