Chapter 30: Chapter 028 Different Worlds
Among the four girls, Chu Xiner, who came from an impoverished family and could only continue her studies through work-study programs, had the least presence.
Chu Xiner, in her washed-out white jeans, white shirt, and desiccated yellow hair, basically alternated between the classroom, dormitory, and library when on campus. Whenever she had a bit of free time, she would definitely go out to do part-time work.
She never participated in any class activities, and, naturally, over time, even her classmates ceased to remember such a girl existed.
In the dormitory, the so-called "Three Golden Flowers" – Tao Yun, Song Xiaoxi, and Zhou Yuanyuan – appeared sisterly on the surface, but even among them, there was a clear hierarchy.
Among them, Tao Yun, the department belle of the financial management department, was noted for her youthful looks and curvy figure, but when it came to family wealth, she could only be considered middle-class and was the least affluent of the three.
Due to the belief that girls should be raised in affluence, Tao Yun\'s monthly allowance of three thousand RMB was considered quite opulent among most students. However, compared to her two other roommates, the gap was not a minor one.
Song Xiaoxi, the department belle of the business management department, came from a privileged family with a monthly allowance of ten thousand RMB. She also had a considerable personal savings, and her clothes were always Chanel or Hermès. Even a pair of sandals on her feet were seldom worth less than five thousand RMB.
However, even Song Xiaoxi was genuinely deferential in front of Zhou Yuanyuan, the school beauty. Part of this was due to Zhou Yuanyuan\'s frosty personality, and another reason was that Zhou Yuanyuan drove a Porsche worth over three million.
So, while the three beauties of the University of Science and Technology appeared harmonious on the surface, there were insurmountable gaps between them.
For instance, when the three would shop together at luxury stores, most of the time, Tao Yun merely acted as a spectator providing various suggestions.
When Song Xiaoxi liked something, she would bite the bullet and occasionally buy an item, while Zhou Yuanyuan would go with her gut feeling – if she slightly liked something, she would nonchalantly toss it into her bag.
Naturally, the vast disparity in their living environments also resulted in different levels of vision and insight among the three.
Faced with the same object, they would naturally adopt entirely different mindsets.
A bottle of mineral water from Kobe, priced at one thousand five hundred RMB, was casually opened by Zhou Yuanyuan, who elegantly sipped from it.
In Song Xiaoxi\'s eyes, a touch of nostalgia flickered as she casually played with the bottle. She had drunk this water before, but she couldn\'t afford to have it regularly – just on certain special occasions.
Knowing that it tasted just okay, she didn\'t find it especially precious. She gently opened it and likewise took a small sip.
As for Tao Yun, the first thought in her mind upon hearing the price of fifteen hundred RMB for a bottle of mineral water was to take a photo and flaunt it on her social circle just to make her classmates and friends envious.
Of course, seeing the surroundings and realizing it was inappropriate, Tao Yun forced herself to suppress the thought. However, she decided to keep the bottle in hand and take plenty of pictures once she got back!
Having made up her mind, Tao Yun, who was holding the water, didn\'t rush to open it. Suddenly, she noticed her close friend\'s gaze continually drifting to the corner of the living room. Curious, Tao Yun looked where Zhou Yuanyuan was looking.
In the corner stood a Qing dynasty porcelain vase, nearly as tall as a person. Tao Yun quietly leaned towards her and asked in a low voice:
"Is there something odd about that vase?"
"Not really, I just think I\'ve seen it before in an auction house!"
Seeing her friend distracted, Tao Yun pursed her lips and said directly:
"Get to the point!"
A somewhat helpless Zhou Yuanyuan rolled her eyes at her close friend and let out a light sigh before she murmured,
"I\'m not sure if it\'s true, but it\'s probably over thirty million."
Amidst Zhou Yuanyuan\'s hesitation, Tao Yun suddenly chuckled, then teased in a voice that only the two of them could hear,
"Yuan Yuan, you\'ve outsmarted yourself, you know? Is there even any need to look? Just consider this bottle of water, do you think Brother Chu would place a fake antique vase in the living room for others to laugh at?"
Hearing this, Zhou Yuanyuan, who had been full of doubts, nodded seriously. Her friend might not know the value of this villa, but Zhou Yuanyuan was well aware that a villa worth seven or eight hundred million wouldn\'t possibly have a fake blue and white porcelain in such a conspicuous place as the living room!
Not just Tao Yun and Zhou Yuanyuan, but several girls in the living room were all somewhat distracted. Among the four girls, Chu Xiner, who was supposed to be the hostess, seemed to be in a world of her own, totally disengaged.
They didn\'t have to wait long, just the time it took for a few sips of water to moisten their throats, when the respectful middle-aged butler stepped forward with an elegant and dignified air,
"Mr. Chu, the meal is ready. Shall we dine now?"
Upon hearing this, Chu Mo, who had been thinking of getting close to the girls to insert his cousin into their inner circle, stood up and said with a smile,
"I wasn\'t sure what you all liked, so I had the butler prepare some dishes at random. Shall we go to the dining room and talk while we eat?"
When the dazed Chu Xiner stood up, naturally, the three girls had no objections. The group of five, led by the butler, made their way to the dining room.
The 200-square-meter living room wasn\'t just luxurious. Tao Yun, holding a fancy bottle of mineral water, looked hesitant. She wrestled with whether to keep holding the bottle, as the others had already passed through the foyer and were about to vanish from sight.
Biting her lip slightly, Tao Yun, unwilling to miss out on the social circle, still held onto the 1,500 RMB bottle of mineral water and jogged to catch up with the others. Zhou Yuanyuan, by her side, gently reminded her,
"You\'re wearing high heels, try to move gently. The carpet you\'re stepping on is made from pure cowhide and costs tens of thousands per square meter."
Hearing this, Tao Yun immediately tread more lightly, feeling as if she had forgotten how to walk.
As they turned into the entrance hall, a colossal dining room of well over a hundred square meters appeared before their eyes, and Tao Yun suddenly opened her mouth wide, her eyes betraying her infatuation.
The spacious dining room of at least a hundred square meters was decorated with furniture and accessories that emphasized elegance and beauty, harmonious and with a meaningful charm.
At a glance, it did not give the impression of the vulgar splendor of nouveau riches. The whole dining room exuded an aura of elegance and nobility, with the crystal palace lamp above their heads adding a neoclassical touch that brought the room to life.
But when Tao Yun saw the huge dining table loaded with a variety of exquisite delicacies, she felt a sudden sense of loss.
As everyone took their seats, maids immediately came forward to lay out the cutlery, while the middle-aged butler personally poured red wine for them.
It was at that moment that a classical beauty wearing a rose-colored cheongsam entered. She had on a delicate and elegant makeup and performed a graceful curtsy.
Then she quietly walked over to the corner of the dining room, sat down beside the guzheng, and began to play.
The music, like water from a spring, flowed gently through the dining room, bringing a unique feeling to everyone present.
Now, looking at the young man seated at the head of the table, Tao Yun no longer harbored the inappropriate thoughts she had earlier.
They were simply not from the same world.
