Chapter 210: Taca de Portugal Finals 2020 II
A powerful shot from Carlos Vinicius after the ball fell to him just after a corner kick took all of Augustin Marchesin’s flexibility to deflect the ball away from its intended target.
After being fisted by Augustin Marchesin’s gloves, the ball smashed against the bar and flew out of play.
This attempt from Benfica served as a sort of shock therapy to the Porto players who once again realized that their opponents weren’t weak and though they had been the ones with the upper hand earlier, the situation could be so easily turned around if they ended up conceding first.
With this Porto pushed even harder to create opportunities.
Soon another opportunity appeared for Porto in the 42nd minute as Otavio sent the ball to Jason who trapped the ball with his first touch before sending a lobbed pass onto the left side of the field toward Diaz.
Diaz got his foot to the ball and sent the ball towards Moussa Marega with his first touch.
Not wanting to take a second touch on the ball, Marega had immediately set the ball alight with a thunderous kick that sent the ball flying just narrowly over the crossbar at an incredible pace.{What a powerful drive!}
{The striker might have been expecting the shot to dip, but it hadn’t done so early enough!}
{Benfica can breathe a sigh of relief! They survive once again! The game is still level!}
The Porto players on the pitch and the fans in their homes had their hands on their heads as they watched the ball miss the goal and fly off target, but the players soon regained their composure while some of the fans’ hands stayed on their heads while the rest of them started arguing with their company about how Marega should have taken the shot instead of having hit it first time.
While all sorts of arguments broke out among the fans, the match continued with the Porto and Benfica team continuously trying to one-up the other, but in the end, the first-half whistle was blown before either of them managed to make a mark on the game.
{The whistle has been blown and the curtains have been drawn on the first half of the Taca de Portugal final and what a first half it was!}
{Filled with thrills and spills and despite the fact that neither of the two teams has managed to break the deadlock, their attacking prowess leaves us with no doubt that we will see the ball fall into the back of the net sooner than later}
{For most of the first half, it seemed that Porto was calling the shots so the Benfica manager has a bit of work to do before the second half}
{Whether it’s a change in tactic, formation, or even players, he will have his hands full if he wants to get more from his players in the second half}
{All in all, this is shaping up to be an exciting match… I’m sure all the football lovers wish for more of such attacking performances in the second half} the commentator spoke as the players headed off the field for the break.
In Porto’s locker room during the break, the head manager commended his players’ efforts and encouraged them to keep pushing forward in this fashion.
He also made sure to remind the team not to forget to put as much focus into their defensive efforts as they were putting into attack as it would be hazardous to fall into a disadvantageous position in the second half.
After motivating his players, he used the rest of the break to give advice to the players while reiterating the game plan for the players so that they could perform even better in the second half.
As they did this, time gradually ran out and it was soon time for the players to go back out to the pitch for the second half.
*Fweeeeeeee*
The shrill sound of the referee blew loudly in the Estadio Cidade de Coimbra, signifying the start of the second half of the Taca de Portugal final.
Immediately after the whistle, the Porto team kicked off the second half and the match soon picked up where it left off.
Hard and fast attacking football seemed to be the aim of both teams and the ball flew from one end of the field to the other within minutes that the second half began.
Both teams sent shots flying at each other’s goal, but it was soon apparent that the Benfica team was playing a lot better than they were playing before the break and their pressure on the Porto back line had increased tremendously.
{I don’t know what to tell you, but whatever the Benfica team manager did with his players during the break is working and we are already seeing the results}
{They get the first corner kick of the second half after almost getting the ball past Augustin Marchesin in a daring attack just seconds earlier} The commentator’s words didn’t stop as he described how Benfica had almost sent fireworks flying in the heads of their fans by almost scoring against Porto just moments earlier.
Luckily for Porto, their goalkeeper had managed to keep the ball from falling into the back of the net at the expense of a corner of course, but no one was complaining.
*Fweeeeee*
The referee blew hard and the ball was sent flying into Porto’s penalty box from the Benfica man standing over the ball.
The ball curved inwardly into Porto’s 18-yard box and players of both teams scrambled to get their head to it, but Chancel Mbemba got his head to the ball first and headed it clear of the penalty box where it fell to Alex Telles.
Telles quickly got the ball under control before sending the ball to Jason who was about ten yards away from the center line.
He hoped to start a counterattack and Jason got the message, as did his other teammates who immediately began charging at the Benfica goal.
Turning with the ball, Jason didn’t even try sprinting and instead sent the ball down the right wing into Benfica’s half of the field where Luis Diaz was already running at the Benfica team.
The ball spun across the ground quickly and soon found Diaz who brought the ball under control with a single touch and took off down the right wing.
As Luis Diaz approached the Benfica penalty area, he saw Tiquinho Soares running at the Benfica penalty area as well, but he was moving through the center of the field.
Without hesitation, Diaz sent a curling through ball that curved past the Benfica defenders trying to stop the counter and found Soares just as he stepped into Benfica’s penalty box.
With a right, side-footed, first-time shot, Tiquinho sent the ball at the Benfica’s goal.
